The weather was far from the optimal clear sunset conditions I’d hoped for, but no less dramatic for that – great clouds flowing over the landscape, dropping rain or more likely hail.

Something I had not realised earlier: the B869 is a comparatively recent attempt at constructing a road through this bit of landscape. There is a narrow tarmac strip – in most parts barely a track wide enough for one vehicle at once, and now overgrown with heather – that crosses either side of the B-road, with large boulders to prevent entry and has been extended into a carpark. I walked along as much of the old road as I could find, conscious of a sense of heritage and change in land usage.
